Tens of thousands of students are bussed to school each day across New Brunswick.

Staffing shortages have made it challenging in the past as students need to get to and from class.

Spokesperson for Francophone South School District Jean-Luc Theriault told us, they are still looking to fill 17 bus driver roles.

He adds summer recruitment efforts were conducted provincewide but were focused on areas where they have faced the most challenges including Fredericton, Saint John, Miramichi and Saint-Louis-de-Kent.

Twenty-three bus drivers were hired for the last school year.  Theriault says their goal is to have 10 more drivers in place by the end of September.

The Anglophone East School District, on the other hand, is fully staffed.

Spokesperson Stephanie Patterson says they have 91 full-time bus drivers and 25 casual, but she adds they are always hiring for casual roles.

Meantime, more students are spending their first day back in class today.

Student registration numbers are expected to fluctuate throughout the month of September.

Patterson says they expect to have around 17, 500 students this year.

She adds they expect to have more official enrolment numbers by September 30th.

The Francophone South School District will also see changing numbers throughout the month, but as of last Friday, they had 16,023 students enrolled.

The week before, they had approximately 15,300.
