Organizers with Thunder Bay’s premiere sci-fi, fantasy, anime and pop culture convention are excited to bring Thundercon back this weekend.

Acting chair Krista Young says she isn’t quite sure as to what to expect this year, as a new branch of fandom is being explored.

“This year’s gonna be different because we’ve branched out even more into pop culture, so having Degrassi we’re going to have people there that we’ve never had before so it will be something new.”

Other guests include GI Joe comic series creator Larry Hama, voice and television actor Alex Zahara, and video game and special effects artist C. Andrew Nelson.

Young notes a big part of the event in addition to the guests is attendees, and even vendors, showcasing their creative skills with cosplay and prop construction.

“We’ve got R2-D2 there, we’ve got the Klingons there, we’ve got builds out of foam that you’ve never seen before in your life that are huge.”

As well there are plenty of extra activities taking place as part of Thundercon but not at the CLE, including a pre-convention event at Silver City Friday night with a showing of the Degrassi movie with Stacie Mistysyn and Pat Mastroianni.

“They’re the ones that wanted to do this,” says Young. “They sent the ‘School’s Out’ movie so that we can screen it, get people really hyped about it they’re going to introduce it. It’s something we’ve never done before but they’re super excited to meet everybody and can’t wait to do it.”

As well a special “After-After Party” for Thundercon Saturday night is being hosted by Black Pirates Pub, which features a dragshow, and Carlito’s is hosting off site gaming during the weekend.”

On site activities include a Kid’s Zone, gaming, an escape room, virtual reality, and much more.
