Nova Scotia’s own Sarah Mitton, fresh off her silver medal triumph at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, continued to make waves in the global athletics scene by securing another impressive second-place finish at the prestigious Diamond League meet in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday.

Mitton showcased her remarkable shot put skills, achieving a distance of 19.76 meters, which secured her the runner-up spot in the women’s shot put event. The Canadian athlete demonstrated her prowess right from the outset, setting the bar high with a formidable first attempt of 19.69 meters. Her second appearance in the circle marked her best throw of the day, once again reaffirming her world-class abilities.

As the competition unfolded, Mitton maintained her hold on the top position for a significant portion of the event. However, it was on her fifth attempt that American athlete Chase Ealey, who previously clinched the gold medal at the 2022 world championships, managed to surpass Mitton’s performance with an astounding throw of 20.05 meters. American Maggie Ewen also made a strong showing from the outset, securing the third position with a throw of 19.64 meters.

Mitton’s journey at the Diamond League included participation in three of the four shot put events, with her shining moment occurring at the Oslo meet on June 15, where she clinched the gold medal. Currently, she finds herself in a tie for third place in the overall Diamond League women’s shot put standings.

This impressive performance has not only solidified Mitton’s reputation as a world-class athlete but has also earned her a coveted spot in the upcoming circuit finals, scheduled to take place in Eugene, Oregon, on September 16 and 17.
