Province not ready to demolish parking garage at Halifax Infirmary

The parkade at the Halifax Infirmary is going to stay a little longer.

The province was going to demolish the garage this summer that houses roughly 525 daily users, as part of a massive redevelopment project at the QEII Health Sciences Centre that will bring a new acute care tower.

Public Works Minister Kim Masland says the design phase is not yet ready, so there is no point in having a big hole in the ground.

Once the garage comes down, it would require off-site parking and a shuttle service.

The redevelopment has been years in the making and plans had already been redrawn to accommodate for the city’s growing population.

No word on whether the project, which could cost billions of dollars, is delayed as well.

The province will spend $254 million for phase one, which is expected to take five years to complete.
