2 new nursing homes open in Moncton

Two more nursing homes have officially opened their doors in New Brunswick.

Gordon Hall and Ocean Hall in Moncton are both operated by for-profit corporation Shannex.

Residents first moved into Gordon Hall in June and others will move into Ocean Hall next week.

“Expanding the number of nursing home beds is one of the many ways we are ensuring New Brunswick seniors can age in comfort and with dignity,” Kathy Bockus, minister responsible for Seniors, said in a news release.

The two 60-bed nursing homes are adjacent to each other and connected by an indoor Main Street.

It mimics a small-town street and has a hair salon, café, town hall and a multi-purpose room that will serve as a chapel, theatre and community gathering space.

The two-storey nursing homes each have two neighbourhoods with 30 residents on each floor. Each floor has dedicated nursing stations, dining rooms, living rooms, libraries and activity spaces.

“Those who have settled into Gordon Hall and Ocean Hall will be cared for by compassionate and professional team members and receive the support they need to live fully,” Jason Shannon, president of Shannex, said in the release.

The two nursing homes are part of the government’s plan to add 520 nursing home beds across the province.

A 60-bed facility, also operated by Shannex, opened its doors in Saint John earlier this year. New nursing homes are also expected to open in Fredericton and Saint-Isidore over the coming months.

Late last year, the province issued a request for proposals to build four 60-bed nursing homes in Bathurst, Bouctouche, Moncton and Oromocto. Officials said at the time that they plan to issue another call for proposals “in the coming months.”

With the opening of the Moncton facilities, New Brunswick now has 74 nursing homes providing 5,133 beds.
