A Ministry of Labour arbitrator has issued a ruling that impacts workers represented by Unifor at ten northern Ontario hospitals.
The award focuses on workplace issues, such as violence and infectious disease.
Unifor says the contract impacting their members now includes articles to address those issues.
“This change acknowledges the dedication and resilience of health care workers who put themselves on the frontlines daily, ensuring that they can perform their duties without unnecessary risks to their safety,” says Samia Hashi, Unifor Ontario Regional Director, in a release.
“While we welcome the award, we know there is a lot of work to do to resolve the pressing and long-standing needs of our health care workers across the province,” states Lana Payne, Unifor National President.
Wage increases were negotiated at the local level.
The ten hospitals subject to the award include Atikokan General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Care Group in Thunder Bay, Geraldton District Hospital, Manitouwadge General Hospital, North Of Superior Healthcare in Terrace Bay and Marathon, Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake, Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie and Lady Dunn Health Centre in Wawa.
