Driveway scams continue

By Adam Riley Sep 6, 2023 | 8:40 AM

More complaints are being received by the Thunder Bay Police Service over aggressive and possibly fraudulent sales people offering drive way repairs and resurfacing.

One of the most recent incidents under investigation saw an elderly victim paying $79,000 just for resurfacing work.

Those offering the services may use intimidation tactics, targeting vulnerable citizens in order to complete those sales.

Police want to remind the public they have the right to shutdown discussions when contacted by unsolicited sales people.

They are also asking residents to check in on their elderly friends and family who may be more aggressively targeted by these scams.

If you believe the service provider may be legitimate, seek their contact information independently from any business cards or pamphlets you may have been provided by the sales person, with a reminder that call display can be spoofed.

You can learn more about scams and frauds as well as how to better protect yourself by visiting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
