It’s almost that time for kids across the Halifax Regional Municipality to head back to school, and that means thousands of parents are scrambling to find school supplies.

Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank has been helping families in need get school supplies for years now. Students across the HRM are back in Class on September 7, just one week away, and the organization says they need more donations to help everyone on their waitlist.

“This year has been, in some sense, an anomaly in terms of the amount of people that are still on the waitlist,” said Parker Street spokesperson Romaine Rhoden.

Rhoden says they currently have 75 families still waiting to get supplies for their children to go to school, and that most families have more than one kid. The biggest item of need is backpacks, which Rhoden says can be easily donated.

He says people who want to help can visit their website, where a big red donate button is hard to miss in the top right corner of the page. You can also drop off backpacks and other supplies at any of their locations throughout the municipality.

“We’re really stressing the back-to-school program right now. So, people can donate directly to that, and they can also buy supplies,” said Rhoden.

He’s especially asking the organizations and companies throughout Halifax to donate if they are able to.

“There are people here that are still in need. We’re still registering people every single day. Yesterday, I believe we registered over 20 people,” said Rhoden.
