By Joe Thomson Aug 31, 2023 | 12:41 PM

The RCMP have charged a 65-year-old woman, who was a band teacher at a high school in Truro, with sexual assault.

Officers were made aware of the incidents, which took place between 2005 and 2007, on August 25th. Based on the information they had, they were able to identify one of the survivors. The survivor came forward on August 25th and confirmed that she was assaulted by the teacher while she was a student at Cobequid Education Centre.

Later that day, officers arrested the Valley woman and charged her with three counts of sexual assault and three counts of sexual exploitation. She was released from custody on conditions that she could have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

The former teacher now volunteers at Redcliffe Middle School, and police say she would sometimes offer private music lessons at her home. They believe there may be more survivors out there.

The RCMP is encouraging anyone who may be a survivor to come forward by contacting your local police or RCMP Detachment. They want survivors to know that they can contact them and discuss an incident before deciding to further participate in the investigation and court process. The Colchester County District RCMP can be contacted at 902-893-6820.
