Students are back to school this week across northwestern Ontario.

For the next couple of days teachers will be involved with professional development.

Nicole Kurtz is into her second year as the Director of Education for the Kenora Catholic District School Board, which includes St. John School in Red Lake.

She says it should be a more normal year.

“So last year was kind of going back to a normal school year, where right now, we’re entering a second year where we’re feeling a lot more comfortable with not having to worry about the COVID protocols,” says Kurtz.

“I think people are feeling more settled and it’s back to normal.”

Kurtz admits staffing will still be a concern this year.

“We’re good to go for this coming week, but I believe the KCDSB and most other school boards in Ontario, staff shortages will be a concern for this coming school year.  So we’ll be navigating that again this year.”

There will be on change to the principals at the KCDSB this year.

Erin Hercun takes over at St. Louis Living Arts School.

She was the vice-principal last year at St. Thomas Aquinas School and replace Maureen Frankcom, who moves to the board office.

Students officially head back to class on Wednesday.
