A skateboard competition in Kenora has a message behind it.

The Sam Bush Memorial Skateboarding Contest was held this past weekend.

Tammy Bush, Sam’s mother, has been organizing it for the past five years.

“It’s an opportunity to be able to talk to young people and the kids in the skate community, and to encourage ways to positively live and deal with stresses,” said Bush during the skateboarding competition.

Bush adds that every year she tries to come up with a different theme and this year it was purpose.

“Your purpose doesn’t have to be something very big, it can be something really small, like helping others or providing something in service to others, and that brings happiness.”

Sam Bush died from suicide five year ago and Tammy’s goal is to make sure other youth don’t fall into the same situation.
