Lunenburg District RCMP has initiated an investigation into a grave vehicular collision that transpired on New Cumberland Rd. in Lake Centre, Lunenburg County.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on August 22, 2023, emergency response teams, including Lunenburg District RCMP, fire services, and Emergency Health Services (EHS), were dispatched in response to a collision report on New Cumberland Rd. in Lake Centre. According to the information provided by RCMP officials, a black Volkswagen GLI was westbound on New Cumberland Rd., while a red Hyundai Kona was traveling eastward. The two vehicles met in a head-on collision.

Tragically, the 21-year-old operator and lone occupant of the Volkswagen, a resident of Mount Pleasant, sustained severe injuries as a result of the impact. She was swiftly transported to a nearby medical facility via ambulance. Subsequently, due to the critical nature of her injuries, she was transferred to a hospital in Halifax with the assistance of the Lifeflight service. The condition of the injured woman remains a concern for medical professionals.

Contrastingly, the 77-year-old driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai, hailing from Mount Pleasant as well, emerged from the collision unscathed. The woman did not sustain any injuries and declined medical attention.

To unravel the sequence of events leading up to the collision and to comprehensively analyze the circumstances, a collision reconstruction expert was present at the scene. The meticulous investigation spearheaded by Lunenburg District RCMP is ongoing, with no hasty conclusions being drawn at this point.

New Cumberland Rd. had to be temporarily closed for several hours to facilitate the response efforts and subsequent investigation. However, the road closure has been lifted, and the route is now accessible for travelers.

The Lunenburg District RCMP urges anyone who may have witnessed the collision or possesses relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation. In times of such unfortunate incidents, cooperation from the public is instrumental in ensuring a thorough and accurate inquiry into the matter.
