The province has taken a big step in improving healthcare in Moncton.

Crews began construction today on a new wing of The Moncton Hospital that will be home to the new Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

The $56 million project is being built on Arden Street near the Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic. The two-storey addition will add roughly 28,000 square feet to The Moncton Hospital and will feature eight new coronary care beds and a 30-bed cardiac/medical unit, for patients who require treatment for a variety of heart conditions.

“It will allow more New Brunswickers with heart issues to be treated and will also allow some patients who undergo operations at the Heart Centre in Saint John to be transferred earlier in their recovery to the Moncton unit,” said Health Minister Bruce Fitch in a news release.

The addition will allow the cardiac intensive care unit and the cardiac/medical unit to relocate and expand respectively. Because these units will be next to each other in the new CCU, staff will be able to treat patients more seamlessly and efficiently within the two units.

The construction is expected to be finished by June 2026.
