A couple recent acts of vandalism have led some in Port Hawkesbury, including the mayor, to call for more security cameras in the community. Meanwhile, that’s exactly what they’re doing in New Glasgow.

New Glasgow Regional Police have launched the NG safe Watch program aimed at enhancing public safety and preventing crime. It includes installing 12 new security cameras throughout the downtown core with the goal of expanding the program in the future to include more areas.

“This NG Safe Watch crime prevention project allows businesses and community to be involved in crime prevention,” said Chief Stephen Chisholm of the New Glasgow Regional Police in a press release. “Installing wireless video solutions will enhance public safety, disrupt and deter criminal activity and enhance police investigations.”

The program is being launched in partnership with the Town of New Glasgow and local businesses. Police will not be actively monitoring the footage, but they will use it to solve and deter crimes when necessary. They say the cameras will also be able to observe behavior and retrieve data when required.
