Firefighters will be honoured each year in the Municipality of Shelburne.

May 27th will be ‘First Responders and Volunteers Day.’

It’s the day the Barrington Lake wildfire began, eventually growing to become the largest in our province’s history.

Warden Penny Smith says those who helped are true heroes.

“This will be a day to recognize and honour these people, as well as the amazing strength and resilience of our community in the face of uncertainty and tragedy,” said Smith.

She says planning will begin soon, and will likely include a proclamation read at council and community events.

Dozens of structures were damaged or destroyed during the wildfire.

Smith adds they’ll continue to be Shelburne County strong.
