PA intersection to close Wednesday

Motorists travelling in, around and through the downtown Port Arthur area will be losing access to a major intersection starting Wednesday.

The intersection of Court Street and Red River Road will be closed as work continues on the North Core Streetscapes project.

Drivers are being asked to drive with caution near the construction zone.

Businesses in the area will remain open during the closure.

Its a short term pain for a long term gain according to officials with the City of Thunder Bay who in a release admit while road closures are frustrating, this project in particular is expected to provide long-term benefits.

“This project originated through the need to replace aging infrastructure under the road. The extensive excavation required to complete that work offered us an opportunity,” said Brian Newman, Senior Project Engineer. “In addition to replacing end-of-life watermains and storm and sanitary sewers, we are redesigning and resurfacing the roadway, installing new sidewalks, streetlights and traffic signals, and adding new public spaces to create an enhanced pedestrian experience.”

Officials with the Waterfront District Business Improvement Area concur with the city, with representative Kara Pratt noting while construction occurs businesses in the affected area will need support.

“We encourage everyone to continue supporting the businesses in the area. Your patronage during this time is essential. Together, we’ll emerge with a more beautiful and functional north core.”

The North Core Streetscapes project is a project valued at a little over $13 million which when complete will see a complete overhaul of the Court Street and Red River Road area within the downtown.
