Dieppe boy swimming 15 km to inspire others in the fight against cancer

By Tara Clow Aug 9, 2023 | 7:25 AM

A 10-year-old Dieppe boy is supporting those battling cancer.

Adriano Hache is swimming 15 kilometres in August as a part of the Swim Challenge for the Canadian Cancer Society.

He was inspired by family friend Gini Bourque, who passed away last year of the disease, “She motivated me to do more to help people. She passed away last year but her inspiration is still alive. I miss her a lot. I really want to inspire a lot of people like Gini did, to help more people who are suffering from cancer,” Adriano says.

He swims up to 2 kilometres, two to three times a week in an effort to reach his goal by the end of the month.

As of earlier this week, he had already swam four kilometres.

His initial fundraising goal before he started was to raise $100, but he is already close to $1000.

Adriano’s mom Karla Hache adds that they are all very proud of him, “We are very happy that this is something that he wants to do. He started doing this because of my co-worker, Gini, who was a good friend of mine. She started raising money for cancer when she was suffering from cancer at the time. Adriano wanted to donate his tooth fairy money to her. Normally, he helps at the Moncton Hospital, riding a bike to raise funds, but this summer he broke his ankle, so he couldn’t do it. When he saw this swim challenge, he was very happy about it.”

His ankle healed at the beginning of August, just in time to begin his swim.

Adriano also swims with an Aquatic Club based in Moncton, Club Natation Bleu et Or. He joined the team in 2022.
