The 2023 Jeux de la Francophonie was a success for New Brunswick athletes.

New Brunswick nabbed two medals at the Games, which were held in Central Africa.

Fredericton wrestlers Vivian Kutnowski and Elena Sehic won bronze medals in their respective weight categories.

Other wrestlers representing New Brunswick included Tania Blanchard of Fredericton, Raymond Hazell of Richibucto, and Koen Poirier of Bathurst.

They were coached by Don Ryan of Maugerville, with Fredericton’s Jeff Allen acting as assistant coach.

Two New Brunswick residents also took part in cultural competitions at the Games. Guillaume Lépine of Taylor Village participated in painting and Pierre-André Doucet of Moncton represented the province in literature.

“The New Brunswick delegation had a memorable experience participating in the Francophonie Games,” Glen Savoie, the minister responsible for la Francophonie, said in a news release.

“Furthermore, the artists were able to present their work to a very receptive audience and networked with other artists from many other countries and member states of the International Organization of La Francophonie.”

Nearly 40 international delegations made up of more than 2,500 young athletes, artists and chaperones attended the event.

As many as 84 delegations from the governments and member states of the International Organization of La Francophonie have been invited to take part in the next Games, which will be held in 2027.
