An arrest warrant has been issued for a Nigerian National following a seven month long sextortion scam investigation by Ontario Provincial Police in Atikokan.

The investigation began in early December into the scam involving a youth, members worked along side officers in Elgin County, the OPP’s Regional Intelligence Unit and Canada Border Services Agency to identify the initial beneficiary of the scam.

Gbolahan Khalid Afinmo is wanted for one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000.

No photo of the accused has been provided by officials.

At the time of the scam he was residing in Gatineau, Quebec.

However, his current whereabouts is unknown but officials believe him to still be in the country.

Police want to remind any adolescents about the importance of remaining vigilant on social media.

Anyone who has access to your friends list can use that as leverage against you if they have obtained any compromising material.

They are advising people not to “friend” anyone they don’t know, noting nothing sent by way of the internet is ever private.

Anyone who may have been the victim of a similar scam is encouraged to reach out to police, as it is possible to identify and charge those participating in scams like these, and can also provide support to get victims through a difficult challenge.
