The RCMP have arrested and charged a 31-year-old New Glasgow man after wild incident of dangerous driving yesterday.

At around 8 p.m. they received reports of an assault happening in a vehicle that was speeding on Highway 102 in Bedford. When they came across the vehicle, a Dodge Ram truck, they observed a woman inside who appeared to be in distress. They tried to initiate a stop, but the driver sped off. Police did not pursue the truck due to public safety concerns.

Later, they found the truck at a nearby gas station in Stewiacke. They saw the man standing outside of the vehicle but as soon as they approached to arrest him, he jumped back in the truck and took off again.

I wasn’t until the truck ended up in a ditch after the driver tried to swerve to avoid road spikes that police were able to finally arrest him. But even then, he attempted to flee on foot. Officers later found out the truck had been reported stolen on August 1, from Shelburne County.

The woman managed to escape on foot amid all the commotion. Police want to speak with her and are asking the public to help track her down. They are treating her as a victim because of the assault that happened inside of the truck, and as such it doesn’t seem like they’re interested in pressing charges.

The man will stand trial and faces the following charges:

  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Failure to Comply with Conditions of a Release Order
