Contract cancellation concerns NDP

By Adam Riley Aug 3, 2023 | 9:08 AM

Timmins – James Bay MP Charlie Angus is voicing his concerns after a contract was cancelled which would have provided work to Alstom’s Thunder Bay facility.

The contract was for new subway cars and was cancelled after only the City of Toronto agreed put up its share of the money for the project.

“Everybody in government says ‘public transit is good’ and yet the feds, Justin Trudeau is walking away on supporting Toronto on a deal that would get these cars built in Northern Ontario and help the Northern Ontario economy.”

The contract was for 80 new cars with a price tag of $2.3 billion dollars.

Angus adds support in Thunder Bay, with the union, and with the new administration in Toronto.

“We’ve got some really strong allies at city hall in Toronto now, what we don’t have is any Liberals that represent Toronto or Thunder Bay stepping up and saying ‘Hey this is our backyard we need to do something.'”

Come the fall session of Parliament he plans to turn up the heat on the Liberals including Thunder Bay – Superior North’s Patty Hajdu and Thunder Bay – Rainy River’s Marcus Powlowski over the situation.
