Canada to set up National Security Council

By Tim Davidson Jul 28, 2023 | 11:08 AM

Canada is going to set up it’s own National Security Council.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says its a response to increasing and different types of security threats to the nation.

“It will have a role of overseeing and setting strategic direction for the new and real security challenges that countries like Canada are increasingly facing,” Trudeau told reporters during a stop in Summerford, Newfoundland.

“It is an additional tool on top other ones we have.”

Trudeau says they’ll be announcing the creation and membership of the new agency in the next couple of weeks.

“We know there have been real challenges, increasingly, from foreign states who want to destabilize our democracies from internal actors who are trying to sow chaos.  We have needed to strengthen our capacity to do that.”

Canada already has a National Security Committee, but it’s made up of Members of Parliament.
