Saint John launches Community Block Party Trailer

Saint John is encouraging residents to get together and celebrate this summer.

City staff and councillors unveiled a new Community Block Party Trailer on Monday.

Mayor Donna Reardon said it comes with everything needed to have the ultimate party.

“It’s got a barbecue, tables, chairs, kids games, hula hoops, a gas tank, a generator, a speaker,” Reardon told reporters after the unveiling.

The free trailer is the third of five new and enhanced recreational initiatives launched by the city this summer.

Saint John’s first disc golf course opened at Shamrock Park in June and the Passport to Parks event series has also returned.

Two all-terrain off-road wheelchairs are anticipated to arrive this fall, and staff are evaluating locations for what will become the city’s first official cricket field.

Reardon said the goal of the block party trailer is to help strengthen neighbourhoods and create some fun.

“It’s really about bringing communities together. In the summertime especially, when the weather is great, you want to get outside, get out with your kids, do something with your neighbours,” she said.

City staff will deliver the trailer before the event and pick it back up after. The renter will be responsible for cleaning up the supplies, packing up the trailer and locking it.

The trailer can only be used by community groups for neighbourhood events within the city limits and is not eligible for personal use.

Officials said it cost $45,000 to set up the trailer, plus the annual cost of staffing and expensing goods.

Reservations are based on a first-come, first-served basis and preference is given to new applicants. They must be requested no later than two weeks before the party date.

You can find more information and make a reservation on the city’s website.
