Council looking at a dog park in Keewatin

Central Park is Keewatin is seen as the best location for an off-leash dog park in that community.

Staff was directed back in April to look at the feasibility of a dog park in a notice of motion by councillor Lisa Moncrief.

Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says Central came out on top of the six locations they identified.

“That location is approximately just under 0.7 hectares of green space,” Breen told city council.

“There’s already a picnic shelter and a playground there.  You know there’s street parking…it’s easily accessible.”

Breen adds that did look at a number of factors in choosing that site.

“Staff had a look at all the available vacant land in the area.  They began shortlisting what options based on size, location, parking, relatively closeness to adjacent services.”

Breen estimates will cost about $125,000 to construct the dog park.

Council will likely put that into their 2024 budget discussions.
