Dalhousie University appoints new president

Dalhousie university has a new President and Vice-Chancellor.

Accomplished lawyer Dr. Kim Brooks will assume the positions on August 14. She has spent years in the law and university sector, serving on faculties for McGill University, Queen’s University, University of British Columbia, and Dalhousie University as both the Dean of the Schulich School of Law and the Dean of the Faculty of Management.

Dr. Brooks also holds the distinction of being the first woman and the first openly queer person to be named president in the school’s history. In a letter announcing Dr. Brooks appointment, Dalhousie acknowledged that these are overdue milestones for a university that has been operating since 1818, but says they are still worth recognizing.

Dr. Brooks will take over from Dr. Frank Harvey, who has been the acting President and Vice-Chancellor ever since Deep Saini stepped down from the role back at the end of 2022.

Dr. Brooks will serve a five year term, and is the 13th president in the school’s history.
