Additional federal funding to assist asylum claimants

By News Jul 19, 2023 | 11:55 AM
Canada is experiencing a rise in the number of people claiming asylum.

Federal Immigration Minister Sean Casey announced a one-time injection this week of $212 million for the Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP), which will be extended until March 31, 2024. The announcement came while Casey was in Moncton, N.B.

The federal government says housing and supports for asylum claimants are the responsibility of provinces and municipalities, but they recognize the need for all levels of government to work together on solutions to address the current need.

The additional funding will assist impacted communities to ensure they have the capacity to keep a roof over the heads of vulnerable asylum claimants.

The funding announced this week is in addition to the nearly $700 million already delivered through the program.
