Tornado confirmed in Northwest

Researchers with Western University’s Northern Tornadoes Project say a small tornado touched down in the region Sunday, the result of the supercell storms which hit the area that evening.

It was rated a one on the Enhanced Fujita scale and started around 7:30 p.m. in the Hine Lake area, near Upsala.

Despite being on the lower end of the scale with wind speeds between 138 to 177 kilometres per hour, it still managed to cut a path through a forested area at least 12 kilometres long and up to 400 metres wide in some spots according to satellite photos.

Further investigation of this tornado and others which may have occurred that day is required, which could include a survey by aircraft according to the research team.
