Residents impacted by the Stein Lake forest fire near Saint Andrews could get financial help.

Last week, the town announced that about $10,000 had been raised by various organizations.

Officials said the money will be disbursed to those temporarily displaced by the fire or who suffered a loss.

The town said eligible costs that can be recouped by residents include:

  • Hotel accommodations between May 27 and June 2
  • Meals, either at a restaurant or groceries, paid between May 27 and June 2
  • The loss of a primary residence
  • Damage to a primary residence
  • Damage to landscaping items such as fencing, gardens, pools, etc.
  • Deductibles related to insurance loss

Hundreds of homes in Chamcook and Bocabec were evacuated during the fast-moving fire, which burned more than 500 hectares in total.

It took crews several days to get the fire under control and more than a month to fully extinguish it.

No one was hurt in the fire but one house was destroyed by the flames.

You can learn more about the funding program and get a reimbursement application by calling the Town of Saint Andrews at 506-529-5120, emailing town@townofstandrews.ca, or visiting the town hall at 212 Water Street.
