The Assembly of First Nations has named its interim national chief.

Joanna Bernard will serve in the role until an election is held in December.

Bernard, who is from Madawaska First Nation, said she is honoured to be selected.

“It is crucial that the Assembly of First Nations resume its important work of advancing First Nations’ priorities,” Bernard said in a news release.

AFN chiefs voted to remove RoseAnne Archibald as national chief in late June.

The vote came in response to a report by third-party investigators looking into five complaints against Archibald.

It revealed Archibald harassed two individuals and retaliated against the five who brought the complaints forward.

First Nations chiefs recently voted to expel RoseAnne Archibald from the position.

The vote followed a third-party report looking into five complaints against her.

In a video posted to her Facebook page last week, Archibald encouraged her supporters to contact their chiefs and leaders to push for her reinstatement.

“I don’t want to be reinstated because of my ego. I want to be reinstated because I have a sacred responsibility that I have to fulfil,” Archibald said in the video.
