The ferry service between Nova Scotia and PEI is back up and running after off-and-on mechanical issues have kept it out of commission for almost a month.

Northumberland Ferries Limited announced today that the MV Confederation is back in service this afternoon and will offer two crossings from Nova Scotia to PEI.

The boat was first sidelined on July 17th when a part that powers its propellers was broken putting it out of commission until the Canada Day long weekend. They managed to squeeze a couple crossings out of it, but it was ultimately shut down again due to a mechanical issue involving a drive connection coupling between the starboard main engine and the central propulsion gearbox.

The MV confederation will make two crossings this afternoon and evening. One at 4:30 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m.

A second ferry, the MV Saaremaa, is in the final stages of tests and preparations before it joins to help keep up with the high demand throughout the summer. Northumberland Ferries Limited Senior Vice President Mark Wilson said in a statement the ship will begin offering crossings on July 15th.
