NS Power installing stronger power poles

By Kevin Northup Jul 10, 2023 | 2:47 PM

Some power poles in Nova Scotia are wider and taller.

Quite a few have been installed in areas where the wind blows the hardest.

Storm lead for NS Power Matt Drover says it’s important, given storms like Fiona and Dorian the last few years.

“We want to make our poles more resilient by installing the taller and wider poles. They can better withstand high winds, and the force of trees coming down onto power lines,” said Drover.

He says they’re focusing on Digby area, the Valley, Lower Sackville and Metro and areas in Cape Breton.

Drover says they’re also spending over $30 million on vegetation control this year.

They’re doing things like cutting branches and moving power poles from the woods onto the side of the road.
