One person has been killed in a house in Pikangikum.

The fire occurred Tuesday at around 7:30 a.m.

Ontario Provincial Police officers were first on the scene and deployed fire extinguishers on the flames before Pikangikum Peacekeepers and community firefighters arrived.

They managed to contain the fire within thirty minutes and completely snuff out the fire in two hours,

Officials say twelve people, including children, were in the home at the time.

The other eleven managed to escape without injury.

“This is another tragedy,” says Chief Shirley Lynne Keeper in a statement issued. “The fast-action response from all of those involved saved many lives, but sadly, we have lost another community member.”

The Independent Fire Nation Alliance identifies the victim as an adult, but no other details are provided.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
