The first Tri-Council conversation between Paqtnkek First Nation, the Municipality of the County of Antigonish, and the Town of Antigonish, took place last week.

The meeting touched on housing, green energy, and developing the labour force among other topics. It is a product of the Friendship and Peace Accord, or the Anku’kamkewey Accord, signed by Paqtnkek and the County in 2018. It’s a commitment to collaborate and support one another as neighbours on community economic and social development.

Last week’s meeting explored how the three communities can work to be stronger together. As the town and county look to act on the Call to Action in Truth and Reconciliation.

“We sincerely want to do more for our three communities. We can be more than land recognitions and raising of flags,” said Laurie Boucher, Mayor the Town of Antigonish via press release. “We want to have more dialogue, to work together, and expand our relationships.”

All three parties say that the resounding, overarching theme of the meeting is that by learning and working together, the entire community is strengthened and succeeds.
