A 41 year old man is dead and a 38 year old woman remains in hospital with what police say are “life altering” injuries, following Monday afternoon’s hit and run near the intersection of Simpson Street and Northern Avenue.

Inspector Ryan Gibson says the couple was walking northbound just before 3:30 p.m. when a red SUV, heading in the same direction, hopped the curb and ran them over, before coming to a stop less than 100 metres from the scene.

Police have reviewed footage of the collision and its aftermath, which according to Gibson, includes several minutes of the suspect sitting in their vehicle, before getting out and walking away towards and into Intercity Mall.

Speaking to media Tuesday Gibson took time to address the driver directly.

“I don’t know why you left, I can only assume you were trying to comprehend what occurred. But you made one bad decision after another, you then left the scene and did not take responsibility for what happened.”

Gibson is appealing for the assistance of the public to help them identify the driver and have the driver to contact a lawyer and to turn themselves into police as soon as possible.

“We are looking for witnesses, people with information. We are going to solve this crime and the sooner the better, we want to bring some closure at least for the family of the victims here.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 807-684-1200.
