Two groups applaud provincial housing strategy

By Allan Dearing Jun 30, 2023 | 6:18 AM

The executive director of Ability New Brunswick feels hopeful about the province’s new housing strategy.

Haley Flaro calls it a made-in-New Brunswick approach since the province has the oldest population in Canada and she adds with age comes disability.

“We have the second highest rate of disability in Canada, next only to Nova Scotia. We are 50 percent rural. Single parents and people with a disability are the most impoverished in our province and housing is a considerable issue.”

Flaro says additional funding for home modifications is welcome since many people are waiting in hospitals to have doors widened and bathrooms retrofitted.

Meantime, Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick is pleased the provincial government took action by unveiling the housing strategy.

CEO Perry Kendall says the province answered a call to collaborate on affordable housing options.

“This support will help us to build more homes each year than we ever have before and help to transform the lives of many more New Brunswick families living in lower income situations.”

Kendall says eight home builds are in progress or recently completed across the province.

He adds Habitat for Humanity has other plans in the works including a new homeowner education program.
