Education Minister says DEC must follow Policy 713

Updates to the Education Department’s Policy 713 will take effect on July 1st.

But several District Education Councils have already created amended policies for their School Districts.

The Education Minister says they can’t do that.

In a statement from Bill Hogan says a DEC can never amend or choose not to follow a provincial policy.

“Our new policy will be in place, and the district education councils know, full well, the spirit and intent of our policy,” Hogan states.

He adds the review of the Policy was done to ensure it is clear and reflects the role parents play in their child’s life and education.

The review of Policy 713 was completed on June 8th, and three sections of the department’s Policy 713 – Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity were updated.

He adds the review of the Policy was done to ensure it is clear and reflects the role parents play in their child’s life and education.

In a statement, Hogan says, “I am and always have been dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment where all children are free to be themselves.  I am confident the three revised sections of this policy will ensure consistency in its application and will support our students, creating a safe environment for learning while still respecting the role of parents.  I am convinced that by September 1 any ambiguity can be cleared up to ensure that’s the case by the beginning of the school year.”
