Dalhousie University has named Rustum Southwell as its new Chancellor.

Southwell has made a name for himself in the local business community, most notably as the founder of the Black Business Initiative (BBI). Over the years Southwell and BBI helped create and expand hundreds of black-owned businesses throughout the region.

He becomes the university’s ninth Chancellor, a role that the school describes as important in a ceremonial and ambassadorial capacity. The Chancellor oversees graduation ceremonies, advocates for the university around the country, and serves as a member of the board of governors.

Dalhousie previously recognized Southwell’s contributions to the community with an honourary degree back in 2018.

He will formally step into the role during fall convocation this November.
