The deaths of 13 Indigenous people which occurred in Thunder Bay over the course of 13 years are being re investigated.

But this time by the Ontario Provincial Police.

The re investigation comes at the request from the Ministry of the Attorney General and was recommended in the Broken Trust Report.

Investigators will re-examine the cases which took place between 2006 and 2019.

Members of the investigation team are being led by a Major Case Manager from the Criminal Investigation Branch.

A spokesperson for the OPP says it intends to take a victim-centred, trauma- and culturally informed approach it investigate the circumstances which lead to the deaths.

The service notes it would be inappropriate to provide any further details, adding release of information regarding active investigations can negatively influence the process, potentially jeopardizing the justice the families deserve.

However, if through the course of the re investigations criminal charges are warranted, they will be laid according to the spokesperson, as the families and the public deserve to know what happened.
