With just over 37 % of the vote former NDP parliamentarian Olivia Chow was selected by Torontonians to serve as mayor.

Runner up in the contest was former deputy mayor Ana Bailão securing 32% of the vote, who just days prior received endorsement from former Mayor John Tory, followed up by former Chief of Police Mark Saunders at 8%.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who last week endorsed Saunders, has already offered his congratulations, noting he looks forward to working with Chow.

A total of 102 candidates were listed on the ballot.

The by-election was called after Tory abruptly resigned in February following a press conference where he revealed he had an affair with a staffer.
