Summer is here and that means thousands of Nova Scotians and tourists alike will be hitting the beach. People can rest assured knowing that certified lifeguards will be on hand to help in case of emergency.

About two dozen beaches across 12 counties will be staffed as of July 1st. They are supervised daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for Mavillette Beach in Digby County, and Clam Harbour Beach in the Halifax Regional Municipality, which are only supervised on weekends.

Lifeguards are required to go through a Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certification as well as certifications in standard first aid, oxygen administration, CPR, and automated external defibrillation.

Last summer, 182,000 people visited provincial beaches and more than 90 rescues took place.
