Ford ready to work with new Toronto mayor

By Randy Thoms Jun 27, 2023 | 2:39 PM

Premier Doug Ford says he’s looking forward to working with Toronto Mayor-elect Olivia Chow.

Chow beat out 101 other candidates in a by-election held to replace John Tory, who stepped down in February after admitting to having an affair with a former staff person.

Ford had endorsed another candidate, Mark Saunders, who received less than 9 per cent of the vote.

Last week, he stated it would be an “unmitigated disaster” for the city if Chow was elected mayor.

Ford says it is just politics.

“During the election, you throw some mud back and forth. But I’ll tell you one thing, people expect us to work together, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’ll work together, and we’re going to find common ground when we sit down because she’s actually quite a nice person,” says Ford.

The Premier says he called Chow last night to offer congratulations and had a great talk with her.

He says while the two may have different ideologies, he’s proven he can work with anyone.

“No matter if it’s Mayor (Andrea) Horvath in Hamilton, with which we have a phenomenal relationship, by the way, or Mayor (Steven) Del Duca, another great phenomenal relationship. I have them over quite often to the house, and I’ll work with anyone as long as they’re willing to work with our province.”
