Feasibility study to look at convention centre for Moncton

By Tara Clow Jun 26, 2023 | 8:42 AM

A feasibility study is expected to begin this week, looking at a potential convention centre for the City of Moncton.

Council approved the $60, 000 study last week.

Interim General Manager of Community Services Jocelyn Cohoon says this is a result of all of the growth they’ve seen in the downtown, “We wanted to do our due diligence and have lots of information available for us, in terms of what is the market out there for Convention Centre? Does the city of Moncton need one? If so, where could it potentially go? How big should it be? What kind of market would it serve, and then also provide us with some potential partnership opportunities that could happen with the city and a private developer or other levels of government.”

She says they’ve recognized that currently, they can’t host some of the requested conferences and conventions, because they just don’t have the required space to do it.

“Let’s do a study and determine exactly what we do need, what the market will sustain, what the city needs regionally and even provincially and what could we potentially build in Moncton that would satisfy all of those needs?” Cohoon adds.

Cohoon expects results within ten to twelve weeks.
