Canada monitoring the situation in Russia

By Tim Davidson Jun 26, 2023 | 6:06 PM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the uprising in Russia over the weekend is an internal matter.

Trudeau is in Iceland meeting with Nordic leaders, but says they are watching and monitoring the situation closely.

“We also know that is something that the Russians will be dealing with over the coming days,” Trudeau told reporters in Reykjavik.

“We need to make sure that we’re not facilitating the liberal use of propaganda and disinformation that we know the Russians tend to do.”

Trudeau adds that they will be watching to see if the situation has any impact outside of Russia.

“We are watching of course.  We are reflecting carefully on what the implications could be either in Ukraine or elsewhere along eastern Europe, including in Latvia where Canadians are stationed right now.”

Over the weekend, private military company PMC Wagner staged a revolt in Russia, but backed down after negotiations with the Belarus president.
