Officer attacked after arson fire, charges laid

By Ryan Forbes Jun 21, 2023 | 11:24 AM

An officer with the Treaty Three Police Service is in stable condition after being assaulted with a ‘sharp-edged object’ during a recent arrest.

The officer’s identity will not be released by police.

The service says they responded to reports of a structural fire that was intentionally set in a First Nation community on June 19, and the accused had barricaded themselves in a nearby home.

With support from the OPP, officers attempted several commands for the accused to surrender themselves, and during this time, the officer was struck by the accused and transported to the hospital.

Police say a Conducted Energy Weapon was deployed, but was ineffective. The accused later surrendered and was placed under arrest.

The suspect is now facing charges of:

– Arson – damage to property,
– Uttering Threats – cause death or bodily harm,
– Assault with a Weapon,
– Mischief under $5,000,
– Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer,
– Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose,
– Resist Peace Officer

The Treaty Three Police say the accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
