The Astor Theatre welcomes Lesli Chandler as new Executive Director

Liverpool, Nova Scotia – The Astor Theatre Society Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Lesli Chandler as the new Executive Director of the iconic Astor Theatre. With her diverse background in the theatre, music, and business administration industries, Chandler’s return to her hometown marks an exciting chapter for the organization.

Chandler brings a wealth of experience to her new role, including active involvement in supporting entrepreneurs, providing administrative support, business development outreach, facilitation, and event planning in the non-profit sector. Her notable experiences include working with CEED-Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development and AWENS – Association of Workplace Educators of Nova Scotia.

Growing up, Chandler had a special connection to the Astor Theatre and credits it for playing a vital role in her development as an artist. Reflecting on her early involvement as a child and young adult, Chandler expressed her gratitude, saying, “It was through my early involvement at the Astor that I was inspired by all of the activity there, shaping the foundation of my career in the Arts.” She has had various roles, including Festival Coordinator for LITF Liverpool International Theatre Festival and representing Liverpool Winds of Change at the Mason, Korea Theatre Festival. Liverpool audiences may also remember her successful play, “In Lieu of Flowers,” which drew packed houses at the Astor. Additionally, Chandler has made guest performance appearances at the Astor for fundraising and special events.

Chandler’s extensive experience in the arts extends beyond the Astor, with performances at renowned venues such as Neptune Theatre, Festival Antigonish, Live Bait Theatre, Grafton Street Dinner Theatre, and Feast PEI. In addition to her performing endeavors, she has a passion for encouraging and supporting youth through her Local Vocal voice lessons and work with the Prospect Road Community Centre.

Expressing her commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive collaborative arts space, Chandler stated, “I am eager to connect with the community and the entire Astor team to continue shining a light on our beautiful and iconic Astor Theatre.”

Board Chairperson John Simmonds welcomed Chandler back to the Astor and expressed excitement about her leadership and expertise. He emphasized the organization’s anticipation of Chandler’s valuable contributions as they strive to solidify their position as a vibrant hub of arts and culture on the South Shore.

Lesli Chandler will officially assume her role as the full-time Executive Director of the Astor Theatre on July 5, 2023. Her appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives and further elevate the theater’s reputation as a prominent cultural institution in the region. The Astor Theatre community eagerly awaits the upcoming chapter under Chandler’s capable leadership.
