An essay about the need for a gender-neutral washroom in their school has earned a Kenora student a Young Authors Award.

Reese Benson, a student at St. Thomas Aquinas School, was a winner in the grade 7-8 non-fiction category.

The award comes from the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association recognizing student excellence in writing.

The Young Authors Awards acknowledge English and French writing in categories ranging from poetry and short stories to plays and non-fiction.

This year, forty-five students were honoured in different grade categories.

“The Young Authors Awards/Prix jeunes écrivains are a celebration of the exceptional spirit and accomplishments of students and teachers in Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic education, showcasing the high calibre of writing and critical thinking happening in our classrooms,” says OECTA President Barb Dobrowolski.

Thousands of entries from local writing competitions were whittled down to 260 for consideration at the provincial level.

Reese was the only winner from northwestern Ontario.
