UPDATE: Power restored at YSJ

By Brad Perry Jun 16, 2023 | 8:38 PM

Power has been restored at the Saint John Airport after an hours-long outage, officials said Friday evening.

The airport experienced an outage earlier in the day and its backup generator failed.

Spokesperson Lori Carle said early Friday evening that a brand new generator had been brought in and crews were working to hook it up.

She says the big generator kicked in at around 7:45 pm and all things are now operational again, and the power is now back up and running.

Officials were using smaller generators throughout the day to power the Air Canada check-in desk and security screening equipment.

“It was about twelve hours we dealt with the crisis, but a big thank you to Air Canada, security and electricians and everyone who helped keep things moving and got people out to their flights.  There might have been some delays but we did get people out to their flights and we’re thrilled about that,” Carle says.

Staff also brought in bottled water and portable toilets as the outage also impacted the airport’s wastewater plant. Water and washrooms were operational again as of 5 p.m. Friday.

The power outage led to some flight delays and cancellations throughout the day.

The 11:40 a.m. Air Canada flight to Toronto was delayed by several hours and left around 5 p.m.

Friday afternoon’s arrival from and departure to Montreal through Air Canada were cancelled.

The early morning Air Canada flight to Toronto was also cancelled, but Carle said it was due to fog at the airport.

Officials said the cause of the initial outage has not yet been determined.
