They can be found in major cities around the world and now they could be coming to Kenora.

Short Term Rentals or STRs are what you would find on platforms such as AirBnB, VRBO and Kijiji, where a private home, camp, apartment or condo is either in part or completely rented out for guests.

Now the City of Kenora wants to test the waters to see if residents are interested in allowing such an enterprise.

It’s launched an online survey which is available until August 1st, as well will be holding in person consultations in June and July giving the public an opportunity to weigh in.

According to the city, unlike hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts, Short Term Rentals operate from residential properties where owners or staff may not be present and currently do not require any safety inspections or licenses for approval or operation.

Analysis from the survey will be used to provide oversight into whether or not by-laws and policies on STRs should be developed.
