Shelburne County fire: schools to open Wednesday, local chamber talks business impact

All schools in Shelburne County will soon be back in session.

Shelburne and Barrington High, along with Forest Ridge and Hillcrest Academy will open on Wednesday for the first time since the wildfire began.

Residents and property owners were able to return on Saturday.

The Shelburne Chamber of Commerce says at least 55 businesses were evacuated.

Vice-President Daniel Khan says businesses outside the zone were a major help.

“So those businesses switched from being a business first, to a support mechanism for those who were evacuating and for firefighters and other first responders coming into the area,” said Khan.

Khan doesn’t know at this time how many businesses sustained property damage.

He said everyone put community first.

“Everybody did the best they possibly could in an immediate response to what was going on.”

The ones who were evacuated can apply for $2,500 from the province.

Crews continue to put out hot spots.
