Holt presses Hogan on Policy 713

The review of Policy 713 came up in the provincial legislature on Tuesday as the Liberal leader sought an apology from government.

Susan Holt was referring to Education Minister Bill Hogan when he recently met with members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“The comments stemmed from what members of government have said including insulting and dismissing a Saint John mother of a trans student and disrespecting a Grade 11 student who is gay.”

Hogan said he wouldn’t reveal the nature of conversations with stakeholders.

The Department of Education’s Policy 713 came into effect in August 2020 and sets minimum requirements for school districts to create a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and affirming school environment for all students, families, and allies of the LGBTQ+ community.

Hogan told the legislature that the province will reveal more details about the review of Policy 713 this week in what he called improvements.

“I am looking forward to moving forward and ensuring that we continue to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as affirming the rights of parents in our society,” noted Hogan.
